What Does a Flight Attendant Do?

A flight attendant ensures passenger safety, demonstrates emergency procedures, serves meals and beverages, and responds to emergencies to create a secure and comfortable flight experience. They serve as the primary point of contact between the airline and passengers, representing the company's commitment to safety and customer service excellence.

Organizations need flight attendants because they are legally required by the Federal Aviation Administration to maintain safety and security standards aboard aircraft. Flight attendants work across the entire organization, collaborating with pilots during preflight briefings, coordinating with ground crews for timely departures, and reporting to supervisors about any incidents that occur during flights.

Flight attendants need strong customer service skills, attentiveness to safety risks, excellent communication abilities, physical stamina, and quick decision-making capabilities in emergency situations. They must also possess the interpersonal skills to handle stressful situations with tact and resourcefulness while maintaining a professional demeanor.

What Are the Responsibilities of a Flight Attendant?

The responsibilities of a flight attendant are to ensure passenger safety through pre-flight checks, demonstrate emergency procedures, serve food and beverages, and respond to medical or security emergencies during flights.

Flight attendant duties include conducting safety inspections before takeoff, greeting and directing passengers to their seats, demonstrating the use of oxygen masks and emergency exits, and monitoring the cabin throughout the flight for any safety concerns. They also provide customer care by serving meals and drinks, answering passenger questions, and offering special assistance to those who need it.

Understanding these core responsibilities helps hiring managers develop relevant interview questions that assess whether candidates possess the safety awareness, customer service orientation, and emergency response capabilities essential for identifying and hiring the best flight attendant candidates.
