Objectives

Responsibilities

  • Inspect electrical components such as transformers, circuit breakers, switches, and resistors to ensure proper functioning
  • Identify electrical problems using testing devices including ammeters, voltmeters, thermal scanners, cable testers, and multimeters
  • Repair or replace faulty wiring, equipment, fixtures, motors, and other electrical components using hand tools and power tools
  • Execute electrical wiring plans for well-functioning lighting, intercom, alarm, and other electrical systems
  • Install safety and distribution components including switches, circuit-breaker panels, conduits, and protective devices
  • Connect wiring in electrical circuits and networks, ensuring compatibility of all components
  • Prepare and assemble conduits and connect wiring through them according to specifications
  • Perform preventive maintenance by routinely inspecting and replacing old wiring, insulated cables, and cleaning circuits
  • Troubleshoot electrical malfunctions and blackouts to identify hazards and implement effective repairs
  • Follow state and local building regulations based on the National Electrical Code for all installations and repairs
  • Direct, supervise, and train apprentice electricians and helpers on proper installation and repair techniques
  • Consult with building engineers, architects, and construction specialists to design and install electrical systems for new construction
  • Prepare work orders, provide cost estimates, and maintain accurate records of electrical work performed
  • Communicate with clients to explain electrical issues, recommendations, and proposed solutions
  • Stay current with revisions to the National Electric Code and relevant legislation, building codes, and safety regulations

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Completion of a 4- to 5-year electrician apprenticeship program with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training per year
  • Valid state electrician license (journeyman or master electrician certification)
  • Proven experience working as an electrician in residential, commercial, or industrial settings
  • Deep knowledge of electrical systems, power generation, maintenance, and repair procedures
  • Thorough understanding of the National Electrical Code and state and local building regulations
  • Demonstrable ability to use electrical and hand tools such as wire strippers, voltmeters, conduit benders, screwdrivers, drills, and saws
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting electrical drawings, blueprints, and technical schematics
  • Strong troubleshooting skills to identify hazards, diagnose malfunctions, and implement effective solutions
  • Color vision to accurately identify electrical wires by color coding
  • Physical stamina and strength to move heavy components up to 50 pounds and work in various positions throughout the day
  • Excellent critical thinking and problem-solving abilities
  • Strong customer service and communication skills to interact effectively with clients and team members
  • Valid driver's license
  • Commitment to safety procedures and use of protective equipment including safety glasses, protective clothing, and hearing protection

Preferred Skills & Qualifications

  • Associate's degree in electrical technology or related field from a technical college
  • Master electrician certification with at least two years of experience as a journeyman electrician
  • Experience in renewable energy fields, particularly solar photovoltaic system installation
  • Additional certifications in specialized areas such as electrical generating, lighting systems, or solar installations
  • OSHA 10-Hour or 30-Hour Training and Safety certification
  • First aid and CPR certification
  • Working knowledge of programmable logic controllers (PLCs)
  • Experience with energy-efficient equipment and products
  • Knowledge of heating and air conditioning systems
  • Specialized training in fire alarm systems, security systems, elevators, or communications systems
  • Experience with new construction builds, renovations, and historical restoration projects
  • Familiarity with industrial and commercial electrical systems
  • Continuing education courses in electrical code updates and manufacturer-specific products
  • Experience directing and managing teams of electricians and apprentices
  • Project management experience or interest in advancing to supervisory roles
