Responsibilities

  • Prepare and serve meals, snacks, and beverages following specific procedures and dietary guidelines
  • Ensure menu selections comply with prescribed diet orders, nutritional adequacy, age, cultural background, and religious practices
  • Obtain menu choices from patients and residents via phone order or patient visitation
  • Prepare meals according to dietary guidelines and individual care plans, accommodating dietary restrictions and preferences
  • Serve meals promptly and ensure food safety and hygiene procedures are followed at all times
  • Inspect special diet trays to ensure they comply with dietary restrictions
  • Monitor patient and resident food intake and report problems with swallowing, chewing, or loss of appetite
  • Set up and take down dining areas, arranging chairs and tables to create a pleasant dining environment
  • Clear the main dining room, wipe tables, and collect used plates, dishes, and eating utensils
  • Wash dishes and equipment, and thoroughly clean work areas including kitchen and pantry
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization in food preparation, service, and dining areas
  • Take inventory of kitchen supplies and food items, and assist with stocking food supplies and ingredients
  • Ensure all food items are stored properly, labeled correctly, and maintain appropriate food temperatures
  • Monitor and report changes in dietary needs or preferences to the supervising dietitian or dietary manager
  • Communicate pertinent information to dietitians, nursing staff, and other healthcare providers
  • Clarify unclear or missing diet orders with nursing staff
  • Resolve patient requests and complaints, or relay to appropriate staff
  • Document meal records, intake information, and track expenses accurately
  • Assist with educational programs on nutrition and provide nutritional support information to patients and families
  • Stay current on individual procedures and protocols for facilities, including state-specified rules and regulations

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Must be a minimum of 18 years of age
  • Food Handler's Permit or ability to obtain certification within one month of employment
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand the English language
  • Knowledge of food safety and preparation procedures
  • Understanding of sanitation and safety guidelines
  • Ability to follow instructions for meal orders, nutritional needs, and recipes
  • Strong attention to detail when preparing and serving meals
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Physical stamina and ability to stand, lift, bend, kneel, reach, push, and pull for extended periods
  • Ability to lift, push, pull, and remove equipment and supplies weighing more than 50 pounds
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage competing meal preparation requests
  • Flexibility in meeting the needs of the department and willingness to work varied shifts including evenings, weekends, and holidays
  • Patience and compassion when working with residents, patients, and family members
  • Ability to maintain patient confidentiality and handle sensitive dietary information securely

Preferred Skills & Qualifications

  • Minimum 1 year of experience as a Dietary Aide or in a food service role
  • Experience in a healthcare food service environment, skilled nursing facility, or long-term care setting
  • ServSafe or similar food safety certification
  • Certified Dietary Aide (CDA) credential
  • CPR and First Aid certification
  • Associate's degree in nutrition, health, diet, or a related field
  • Understanding of geriatric nutrition and dietary needs
  • Knowledge of therapeutic diets and special dietary needs
  • Familiarity with child nutrition programs and dietary guidelines
  • Experience with dietary management systems or food service software
