Agentic AI: A case for user experience in recruitment

(This article is completely human written content)
A lot has been talked on Agentic AI, about how awesome it is and truly it is a great concept and technology that has emerged. However there is huge variation in terms of how to best use Agentic AI and where the benefits of this technology can be truly experienced.
AI has always been fascinating since working at X0PA AI from early 2018 and we have been on this mission to bring the right ethical usage of any new age technology into recruitment use case. Over years we have always enthusiastically tried and used various advancements in AI technology, incorporate into our recruitment platform and have also done a fast fail in some scenarios. With Agentic AI however everything feels different. It is not just an incremental update, the concept and the framework has real true potential to redefine how we interact with software and how its utilized.
A user experience makeover is coming
Agentic AI will bring in a user experience makeover. Humans over the years have predominantly “used” software, probably hence the word user I suppose. My definition of the word use here refers to the amount of energy and time users spend to add data into the system, clicking on buttons, filling up forms and spending time interpreting the output system generates. At the most basic level, any software product is essentially a data input / entry by user, data processing and some sort of output. Fundamentally systems that have made these 3 steps as painless or as enjoyable as possible have predominantly garnered success in the market. To achieve this, software products typically embodied various strategies / features such as dashboards, forms, search, advanced search, faceted search, recommendation engines, notifications, user guides, onboarding and lot of other features etc., to ensure that the users can “use” the system effectively.
Does software need to be “used”?
Now with Agentic AI into play, we now have the opportunity to fundamentally pivot how software is used. Software can now be told or defined what you want to accomplish in natural language, and the software should be able to achieve the end result with minimal to reasonable level of human intervention. This is a monumental fundamental shift to how we interact with software. Software interaction can now be more fluid, more natural, more exploratory, and bit more spontaneous just like how humans interact in real world.
A paradigm shift in user interaction
This essentially means that our existing rules for user interaction would essentially become obsolete in a few years and new interaction methodologies and patterns would emerge. Software is going to be more natural language driven, and the user experience will truly be more dynamic and personalized depending on the workflow / use cases each user uses. For example: In recruitment the user experience of a recruiter is generally different from that of a hiring manager. But even amongst recruiters, the actual user experience could vary depending on what’s more important to the user at a given point of time. So, your entire user experience architecture itself will be very fluid in the long run and hyper personalized. Although these fundamental concepts are present in today’s non-agentic software, we’re looking at an astronomical exploration of these core concepts under Agentic AI, where there may not be a set UI and the agent can surface information to the user depending on the context and need, making your software very dynamic, hyper personalized and hyper natural.
A system that can reason
Recruitment is a very collaborative process. Collaborative processes can be mentally taxing sometimes depending on the volume of stakeholders and also the nature of the stakeholder interaction. So, an intelligent reasoning layer therefore creates a tremendous impact with regards to user experience to determine what needs to be done next and also what’s important for the user to act on at any given moment. With Agentic AI, once the base workflow of recruitment is understood by the agent it could organize candidates and highlight to the recruiter various decision points that’s needed from them. With strong reasoning capabilities, systems can identify blockages in the process, suggest alternatives, optimize and also highlight urgent action items to the user. Instead of recruiters opening the software to filter candidates by status and then figure out what actions to take, the agent could surface actions / decisions pending from the user with regards to their urgency.
A system that adapts the user experience
Organization and interpretation of data is another aspect where a lot of time is spent understanding how to organize and display data on the screen. Different user roles, age groups, demographics etc., like data to be organized in different ways to various levels of detail and granularity. Recent advancements have made it possible to think and envision a user experience design where data points, their format and the mode of presentation of data can be fluid and depending on the context, the presentation of content, what content to show and its format can be dynamically personalized so that users get the flexibility and freedom to decide and define how they want the content to be organized. This is a seismic shift in my opinion. Software today is built based on a normalized experience across different user demographics but in reality, it is a calculated compromise. With code generation capabilities we can build truly adaptive and personalized user experiences tailored at an individual user level.
Finally, A system that is truly proactive and helps with the heavy lifting
Traditionally platforms rely on KPIs such as engagement metrics, time spent on platform etc., to determine the efficacy of the software. With Agentic AI, this will change. The focus of these KPIs will now shift more into value and qualitative based metrics. Software now could play a role in ensuring that your recruitment goals for a quarter or year are achieved. It is no longer a system to track data and move candidates from one stage to another but rather it has enough (artificial) intelligence to understand the your processes, workflows, goals, objectives etc., and works to equip you proactively with information and decision points to ensure your recruitment objectives are met and set you up for success.
